Art

Art from Harry Potter to the common daffodil

Sketches for J.K.Rowling's books will be on sale alongside local artists' work at two events this month, writes SYLVIA VETTA Community arts are blooming early this year. We can whet our appetites before May's Arts Weeks with two events this month. One is Art on the Hill at Brill, which is in its 14th year and growing from strength to strength. The other can be found at a welcome new gallery in Abingdon, which opened its doors almost a year ago to support artistic life in the town.  more...

Link: Constructions in Fabric and Fibre, Radley College

Wendy Hughes and Joanna Gilmour, textile artist and basket maker respectively, have collaborated to create an exhibition where not only does each piece speak eloquently for itself, but the pieces work well together to create an engaging whole, through which the visitor is introduced to the wide range of ways in which materials and techniques can be used to give artistic expression to ideas and aspirations.  more...

Gilbert & George: Major Exhibition, Tate Modern

'Your way is as hard as we are blood-hard with rigid-brained resolution." This quote from Gilbert & George, who star in their own feature-length movie, The World of Gilbert and George, is one which aptly encapsulates the colliding energies of quotidian ambition and East End lacklustre that permeate the work of this artist duo on display at the Tate Modern.  more...

Cinema

Focusing on film efforts to make a world of difference

DAVID PARKINSON takes a peak to see what lies behind the curtains of the Oxford Brookes Human Rights Film Festival Now in its fifth year, the Oxford Brookes Human Rights Film Festival has established itself as one of the city's most significant screen events. Organised by postgraduate students on the university's masters course in Humanitarian and Development Practice, the programme will be launched by the singer Billy Bragg.  more...

The Illusionist and Freedom Writers

Cinema is the ultimate illusion: the creation, at 24 frames per second, of worlds both real and fantastical that transport us away from our humdrum, everyday lives. In the hands of a master director, film can be a dazzling spectacle that holds us spellbound; one wrong move, and the magic is broken.  more...

Try a little old-style elegance

There's a stark contrast in styles this week between Dito Montiel's adaptation of his autobiographical bestseller A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and the Jessie Matthews season that launches at the National Film Theatre in London. The cut-glass accents heard in these 1930s British musicals have long since been abandoned for a more naturalistic argot. Yet authentic speech patterns can sometimes seem every bit as artificial, as the cast in Montiel's arch directorial debut demonstrates by working so hard on making the often banal dialogue seem spontaneous that the film feels more like a drama workshop than a slice of life.  more...

There is a good number of keepers who have concentrated on establishing pedigree flocks.  more...

Dance

Coppelia: New Theatre, Oxford

Back from a long holiday, I was just in time to catch the second offering from Ellen Kent's newly formed Russian Classical Ballet Theatre. For several years Kent has greatly enlivened the Oxford ballet scene by bringing over the Chisinau National Ballet, and her new group contains several of its leading dancers. Happily included is the formidably talented and tremendously engaging Kristina Terentieva, about whom I have enthused on previous visits.  more...

The Canterville Ghost: English National Ballet, Wycombe Swan

Adding a new full-length work to the repertoire is a risky venture for any dance company, and taking an unknown work on tour even more so. Despite excellent reviews from the national critics, Will Tuckett's The Canterville Ghost, for English National Ballet, played to a half-empty house at the Wycombe Swan, and on this showing I don't feel that the situation is likely to change, even though the work is performed by one of the world's leading companies.  more...

Gardening

When small is beautiful

VAL BOURNE says the standard daff pales beside the massed ranks of the miniatures It may have been a mild winter on the whole but it's also been a grey one and I'm longing for some jaunty daffodils to appear and brighten up early spring. Some of the most useful in the garden setting are the miniature daffodils: they are less than a foot in height and they can withstand early-spring squalls far better than the taller forms. This isn't surprising, because most daffodil varieties are bred by amateur hobbyists for the show bench rather than the garden.  more...

Mixed messages on cholesterol

Readers of The Times's Saturday Body&Soul supplement are seriously, and justifiably, worried about cholesterol. This is why Kellogg's spent a small fortune last week on this advertisement which filled the back page of the section. Kebab sale ban - what nonsense

What planet are our councillors living on? On the one hand, they want to shut all the kebab vans down at 3am to avoid 'flash points' and, on the other, they are setting up a 'wet garden' for drinkers, an area that will attract trouble.  more...

High Court and truth about lake

Sir, RWE npower has repeatedly suggested to the public, the media and the authorities that our electricity supply might be at risk if they are not allowed to fill Thrupp Lake with ash from Didcot power station.  more...

Poll axed

Sir, Watching the Newsquest online poll, which asked whether RWE npower should stop work whilst the Radley Lakes town green application was in pursuance, and noting the number of supporting comments tallying with the ratio of yes-no at the early stage of the poll, I became suspicious on Friday afternoon, when the margin started to swing too much in favour of npower and not in keeping with public opinion, which I know is behind the Radley Lakes campaign, with only a very few exceptions.  more...

'Disturbing'

Sir, I am writing to express my concern, firstly at the determination of npower to use Thrupp Lake, an area of great natural beauty and environmental importance, as a dumping ground for noxious ash (especially as the Save Radley Lakes campaign group have suggested an alternative site for such dumping), and secondly, and most particularly, at their destruction of mature trees surrounding the lake whilst the application for town green status for the area is still under consideration.  more...

'Dismayed'

Sir, I am dismayed to discover that your vote on the Radley Lakes has been closed. I feel disenfranchised. Yes, I work at Didcot power station, but surely, if your poll is to be meaningful, it should admit voting from all shades of opinion.  more...

Music

Oxford Chamber Orchestra: Sheldonian Theatre

Exuberance and eloquence were the hallmarks of the Oxford Chamber Orchestra's concert on Friday. This was a well-balanced programme, which seemed to run through the whole gamut of emotions, from the solemnity and wit of Mozart's Magic Flute overture, to the haunting, evocative sounds of Silbelius's En Saga and the tragic overtones of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique. Under the meticulous and articulate direction of conductor Jonathan Williams, these varying emotions were conveyed with exceptional clarity.  more...

Wihan String Quartet: Holywell Music Room

'A quartet made in heaven" is how the Wihan String Quartet's website describes the group, and last Sunday's concert at the Holywell proved just how apt that description is. Theatre

Only acting

GILES WOODFORDE talks to the director and cast of Soap, an affectionate spoof "But I thought you were interested in cultural things like opera," exclaimed The Oxford Times Arts Editor, Christopher Gray, when I confessed to being a long-term fan of Coronation Street. That it can nevertheless provide a gripping evening for audiences, and a series of challenging roles for its performers, was amply demonstrated last week in a well-managed production at Chipping Norton Theatre by students of the Woodstock-based Oxford School of Drama, under director George Peck.  more...
