Gray Matter

Dickie is a brick at The North Wall

It was three years ago - and at this time of the year - that I first met the film and television composer George Fenton and heard something of the ambitious plans for The North Wall at St Edward's School. I place the year without much effort, because it predated my heart troubles, as I know from the gusto with which I laid into a plate of enormous scallops - now a forbidden delight - during our dinner with mutual friends at the Lemon Tree, in Woodstock Road. The time of year is easy, too: before heading north to the restaurant, we had witnessed the annual tradition of Tim Henman's Wimbledon defeat on a television strategically placed for viewing from a sunny North Oxford garden.  more...

Music

Das Rheingold, Longborough Festival Opera

'It can't be done." "Impossible!" In a brief pre-show speech last Saturday, Longborough Festival Opera's founder Martin Graham summarised the responses of the doubters and scoffers to his plan to stage Wagner's Ring cycle in the little theatre he has built in the grounds of his Gloucestershire home. Mr Graham knew as he spoke that in fact it was his critics who were now looking silly. Two excellently received performances of Das Rheingold had already shown that the project was off to a solid start; here, as we awaited the start of the third (and, sadly, last this season), there was a palpable sense of being present at 'an event'.  more...

North Wall Summer Festival, Handel concert

Since swimming baths are notoriously noisy, echoey places, it is important that I should stress straightaway that Oxford's new North Wall arts centre, which has been fashioned from one, has absolutely splendid acoustics. The matter was settled to the satisfaction of both the performers and the audience during a delightful evening of music-making held there on Monday at the start of a three-week Summer Festival. And settled, I suppose I must add, to the relief of the authorities at St Edward's School, who have spent about £4m on this ambitious scheme - though I am sure that making the place sound good was an early priority.  more...

Perfect Houseplants, The Spin

A perfect houseplant requires minimum attention, looks attractive and then blooms beautifully and quite unexpectedly. The jazz quartet Perfect Houseplants, led by pianist Huw Warren and saxophonist Mark Lockheart is by this description quite aptly named, though more than minimum attention does give greater rewards. The group's tightly structured compositions that begin from relatively uncomplex pastoral' lines and build into more dense melodies allow one to sit back and listen to the unfolding with a degree of expectation, sometimes with longing, for the formal arrangements to break out into the blossom of a variegated solo. When this happened at the Spin, Perfect Houseplants created some great moments of contemporary jazz.  more...

Oxford Sinfonia, St Mary's Church

By any standards, the Oxford Sinfornia's recent concert was a triumph. Soloist, conductor and orchestra gave it everything they'd got to produce a memorable evening of music. Opening with a sensitive performance of Sibelius's Pelleas et Mellisande, the orchestra and conductor showed themselves to be totally involved in finding a dynamic range to shed new light on this familiar suite. John Lubbock cajoled and encouraged outstanding solo and ensemble phrasing. From outset to close, this was a magical journey - in particular the exquisite cor anglais solos.  more...

Stubbing out a silly habit

'If you were meant to smoke, you'd have a chimney on top of your head." Thus one of a pair of smokers on Three Minute Wonder (Channel 4) summed up the absurdity of the tobacco habit. Who else but humans would have thought up the strange idea of wrapping up chopped leaves in a paper tube, setting light to it and inhaling the smoke? We can hope that the smoking ban in public places which began last Sunday may mark the decline of smoking.  more...
